Dear Congressman (Congresswoman) (Senator),
Cuts to federal programs that help impoverished American people with basic human needs like food and shelter would be a disaster for our nation. Food Banks, soup kitchens, food stamps and child nutrition programs, homeless services, supplemental social security for the elderly and disabled, and other critical programs for those in most dire need are in jeopardy. Under the proposed Trump budget, Community Services Block Grant (CSBG), which funds these programs, is slated to be defunded.
We cannot turn our backs on the one in five children living in poverty in our country. It is appalling to consider. We cannot afford to foot the bill for the burdens that will be subsequently placed on health care, education, courts, jails, and families.
San Bernardino was once known as a “Great American City.” Now we are home to the Nation’s poorest of the poor, racked with crime, hit by terrorism, and long-suffering with lack of economic opportunity. Our federal government will further push down our citizens and communities with proposed federal policies like these.

Dear Congressman (Congresswoman) (Senator),
Cuts to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) are an unacceptable answer to resolving federal budget issues. Many families are forced to choose between eating and having energy in their homes. Are we asking the elderly, disabled and families with children to have no power so they can eat? Families on low and fixed incomes have tough choices and limited options. For many this is a health issue, like elderly persons with arthritis or medical issues where household temperatures or lack of for energy to power medical devices can severely affect them.
Energy costs in this country cause a severe financial burden on low-income individuals who comprise 15% of the national population. In addition, one in five children nationwide live in poverty. These families are unable to meet the financial requirements to maintain basic living conditions. I am concerned for my fellow Americans and my communities who are subsequently negatively affected.
