Celebrating 60 years
Our Story
Beginning in 1965, we were born from the signing of the Economic Opportunity Act, signed by then President Lyndon B. Johnson. We served San Bernardino County for ten years, providing (blank) assistance, before adding our Energy Conservation Weatherization Services Program in 1975. In 1984, we became the lead agency of the San Bernardino County Homeless Coalition. Five years later, in 1989, we launched our Food Bank, which today serves over (number) million residents across the county. In 1996, we expanded our transitional housing services after acquiring the Obershaw House via donation. By 2001, a light had gone off for us, realizing the burden that high price utilities have on families, we developed our Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) to help ease that burden. 2003 saw us officially join the Community Action Network, marking the birth of our name, Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County (CAPSBC). Understanding the barrier associated with filing taxes, we launched our Volunter Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in 2005 to assist low-income residents in filing their taxes ensuring clients got all available tax credits. Two years later, in 2007, we moved to pur current home in San Bernardino, at 696 S. Tippecanoe Ave. During the 2010s, we expanded our Food Bank reach and services, adding; the High Desert Food Resource Collaborative in 2016, launching the Senior Choice Porgram in 2017 and developed our Campus Cupboard Program in 2018. To kickoff the 20's, we faced the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic. In response, we were provided over $3 million to provide support aimed to mitigate the negative effects of the pandemic. In 2021, our Food Bank became a designated Diaper Bank in California, serving (number) of families yearly. 2021 also saw the development of our mobile fleety, which inlcuded a mobile shwoer, mobile laundry and a mobile office.
